George Woods
A graduate of Southern Illinois University, George Woods earned Olympic Silver
Medals in the Shot-Put in 1968 (Mexico City) and 1972 (Munich). He was a three
time All American and NCAA Indoor Champion (1966) while at SIU. George was a
three time Olympic Trial Champion (1968, 1972, & 1976). In 1974 he set the World
Indoor Record at 72' 2-3/4." Amazingly, he won seven National AAU Indoor and
Outdoor Championships. Additionally, George also won the US Track Federation
Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 1964. George Woods is widely considered as
one of the most durable and competitive athletes in the history of track & field
in this country.
